your networking cheat sheet : 5 quick tips

Hey there,

First off, results are on from the poll last week about banning political discussions at work. Seems this community leans into not banning.

Based on comments you sent, there is a recognition that we need to help people be able to navigate these waters - even it's it to say no.

With a bit more time on my hands, I’ve started being more proactive in networking.

Networking isn’t my favourite pastime. I often worry about wasting people’s time or them not being interested.

But I’m pushing through and want to share what I’m (re-)learning about networking:

  1. There is SO MUCH goodwill in my network. People like to help. There is goodwill in yours too.
  2. Super connectors love connecting you to someone else in their network. Start from your inner circle and work outwards.
  3. Meeting people in person is much harder post Covid. None of us are in town at the same time! Time to embrace the virtual chat
  4. Reciprocation rocks! What makes a conversation zing for me is when the other person asks me how they can be useful in helping me with my goals.
  5. The best tool to arrange meetings with people outside your organisation is Calendly. I love it. It’s taken the tedious back and forth out of arranging a meeting. It integrates with your own email so you can keep everything synced up.

I hope this inspires you to reach out to your network for support on whatever’s is on your plate.

If you want experiment with that first networking call, let's have a virtual 30 min coffee.

No sales BS. Just practice at networking for us both. Find a time here

Yours

Catherine

Keeping it short today Reader, I want to help you elevate your leadership skills and team dynamics through executive coaching. And any leader who truly cares about their team knows it’s better to understand what they need than to guess at what they might want. So this is me asking. In a one-question-only survey. It should take you less than a minute to fill out. Thanks Reader. You make coaching a lot more fun. Catherine P.S. One minute to tell me about your leadership challenges.

Hey Reader, One of the common complaints I hear about bosses is their lack of availability. So my tip for you this week…. Don’t cancel your 1:1 meetings with your team. YOU hold the power in your role as boss (even if you don’t feel it!) If you ask your team member if it’s okay to reschedule a 1:1, they will likely say yes because they don’t think they have a choice. I know you feel under pressure a lot of the time, but the 1:1’s are not the place to find space. If you’re a coachey-leader,...

Hi Reader, I’m packing my bags for 2 weeks in Denmark. Perhaps you are packing bags too, or rumbling with the kids already on school holidays. So I’m going to keep it short – and dropping in a leadership tip this week. Block out 30 minutes for reflection at the end of each day. A grumpy looking CSM taking reflection seriously! If like me, you spend a day in meetings and a whirlwind of decision making, you need time to digest the day. Reflection time is that integration of the day’s events,...
